For years, we proudly owned and operated our little construction company. Like many owners, we put everything we had into making our small business a success. When it was finally time to sell, we hired a business broker, believing that financial freedom was within reach. However, after covering taxes, rewarding our amazing team, settling obligations, and managing seller financing—and most painfully, paying a 12% sale commission to the business broker—we were left with much less than we’d hoped. Retirement or even helping our five children through college no longer seemed possible.
We felt frustrated knowing we had given up so much of our hard-earned value to someone who simply pushed a transaction. The memory of the business broker driving away in a brand-new Porsche, funded by our years of effort, still haunts us. Meanwhile, we were still driving the same old Dodge truck we’d used to run the business. There had to be a better way.
To create that better way, we first needed to fully understand the system. Cory became a business broker himself, learning firsthand about the challenges, values, and inefficiencies in the traditional business broker model.
